The owner of this 1926 colonial in Dobbs Ferry was dealing with an 11-year-old HVAC system that had developed a refrigerant leak.
Rather than continue putting money into repairs on an aging and inefficient system, the homeowner wanted a long-term replacement that could provide reliable heating and cooling while helping address high utility costs.

Replacing an Aging, Leaking HVAC System
A refrigerant leak does not automatically mean an entire HVAC system needs to be replaced. But when equipment is already more than a decade old, homeowners have to weigh the cost of repairing the existing system against investing in new equipment.
In this case, the homeowner wanted to avoid making costly repairs to a system they expected would continue requiring attention over time. Efficiency was another consideration.
The goal was to replace the aging equipment with a modern heat pump system capable of providing heating, cooling, and dehumidification throughout the home.
Designing the Mitsubishi System
A load calculation was performed as part of the project before finalizing the system design.

A configuration using a single outdoor unit was considered. While that design could provide heating, cooling, and dehumidification with only one outdoor unit and one electrical connection, it was not our recommended approach.
The number of indoor units and the length of one refrigerant-line run meant the single-system configuration would not be as efficient as a multi-system design and could place additional demand on the outdoor unit during peak conditions.
Instead, the final installation used two Mitsubishi Hyper Heat outdoor units.

Together, the two outdoor systems serve four ductless indoor units throughout the home. Splitting the system between two outdoor units gave us a better overall design than forcing all four indoor units onto one condenser simply to minimize the number of outdoor units.
Completed in Three Days
The complete installation was finished in approximately three days.
For an older Westchester home, equipment selection is only part of designing a good heat pump system.
Refrigerant-line lengths, the number and size of indoor units, the home's heating and cooling requirements, and how the equipment will operate during peak conditions all need to be considered. Sometimes the system with fewer outdoor units looks cleaner or saves on electrical work, but that does not automatically make it the best-performing design. For this Dobbs Ferry home, dividing the four indoor units between two Mitsubishi Hyper Heat systems provided the better overall solution.
